Tornado watch issued for chicago area




The National Weather Service has send out a tornado watch for the Chicago area until 8 p.m. Strong storms capable of large hail/damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are possible. Saturday evening. Strong storms capable of large hail/damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are possible.

Thunderstorms were expected at several points over the weekend but Saturday was expected to see the worst of it, according to weather service meteorologist Matt Friedlein.

According to Chicago tribune - Northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, northwest Indiana and eastern Iowa all were under tornado watches Saturday afternoon, the harbinger of a sometimes stormy holiday weekend in the Chicago area, with a chance of more flooding and severe thunderstorms.

The tornado watch comes as warmer temperatures are expected throughout the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, severe storms are expected throughout Saturday . The weather service said the warm and humid weather will also yield a daily chance for storms Sunday through Thursday.





Expected threats include -

  1. Several tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes Possible
  2. Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible
  3. Scattered large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible

Temperatures in the city are expected to reach the mid-70s, with cooler conditions along Lake Michigan. Temperatures could rise into the high-70s in the suburbs and even into the low-80s before rain showers begin developing in the western suburbs just after 1 p.m.

That humidity will last through the holiday weekend, with temperatures reaching mid-80s Sunday and Monday.There is still a chance of thunderstorms Sunday and Monday but it will be much more scattered compared to Saturday
